The Adverse Health Effects of Water Pollutants

Water is needed everywhere, whether it is for cleaning, cooking or drinking, it’s the first basic necessity required to survive for any human being. Water purification systems are heavily used in various sectors. The impurities released into the water by these big industries are causing a major harm to the environment and also on human health.  While the importance of water is undeniable, it is however being polluted by these industries and people due to various reasons. Some of the biggest factors which contribute the most towards water pollution are given below.

Industrial Wastewater: The wastewater coming from industries contains a huge amount of chemicals which has a lot of effect on human health, it also harms the environment equally. If left untreated and released in the freshwater can pollute the water bodies causing adverse damage.

Oil Pollution: Another reason for water pollution is the oil spilling they not only destroy the sea life but also enter our homes. The chemical and waste that they contain are quite dangerous in nature and cause water pollution at an alarming rate.

Pesticides & Fertilizers: Pesticides & Fertilizers used in agriculture make their way through water reservoirs. They contain immense amounts of chemicals if consumed by us can cause a lot of adverse effects on human health.

Mining Activities: The waste from mining activities lets out sulphides from the rocks which in return pollutes the water bodies.

Increasing Population: Population growth is creating many issues such as increase in solid waste generation. The discharge of these effluents contaminates the water with bacteria which is harmful for human health. India, having the 2nd highest population in the world, faces a lot of water related issues. Approximately, about 70% of India’s water supply is dangerously polluted with sewage effluents. Diseases like Malaria, Hepatitis, Cholera, Typhoid, Amoebiasis, Giardia and many others are all caused by consumption of contaminated drinking water. The need for water purification systems across India has increased in order to tackle this problem. A water purifier in homes across India can help overcome various diseases caused by contamination of water such as:

  1. Cholera: It is caused by a bacterium named Vibrio cholerae, if it is left unattended can be fatal.
  1. Typhoid Fever: This fever is caused due to contaminated food, unsafe water, and poor sanitation, and it is highly contagious. It is estimated that up to 20 Million people worldwide suffer from this illness each year.
  1. Giardia: This disease is shared through contaminated water, most often found in water ponds, streams and also the town supply of water. The infection is caused by a parasite.
  1. Malaria: Malaria is spread through a parasite called Plasmodium parasite mosquito. It breeds in water bodies like lakes & stagnant water.
  1. Filariasis: This disease is caused by parasites found in untreated sewers and unsanitary water bodies. And it is spread through mosquitoes and people who are close to such water bodies.

How to prevent Waterborne Disease?

In order to prevent these waterborne diseases caused due to drinking impure water, one should buy a water purifier for your home, office and to carry filtered water if going to places with low or no access to pure water.

Things to keep in mind while buying a water purifier

Always check the TDS level of your tap water before buying a water purifier, if it is less than 500mg/litre and you are searching for an automated home water filtration system, then you should choose one that uses Nanotechnology. Some of the best water purifiers for home use Nanotechnology which revolves around the use of an intelligent semi permeable membrane with pore size in the nano scale of less than 10 nanometres surround by a charge field, which enables the membrane to distinguish between impurities and essential minerals to provide you with the purest mineralised water.
